On 7th June 2026 we were back at the Williams Experience Centre for ‘Race Day Hospitality’. This week was for the Monaco F1 GP, arguably F1’s most famous track.
It was on the calendar for the first Formula 1 World Championship in 1950 and has remained a fixture almost every year since 1955. Although the circuit has been revised several times over the decades, it still retains the basic layout first introduced in 1929.
The most significant change came in 2004, when organisers built a permanent pit complex in the swimming pool section of the circuit. This replaced the cramped temporary facilities that teams had previously used.
Monaco’s tight and twisty layout presents one of Formula 1’s greatest challenges. Nelson Piquet famously compared driving around Monaco to “riding a bicycle around your living room.” As a result, overtaking at Formula 1’s shortest circuit is extremely difficult. There is almost no room for error, while the narrow streets leave drivers with little opportunity to relax. Over the course of the 78-lap race, each driver makes almost 5,000 gear changes.

The 2020 Monaco Grand Prix was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. It marked the first time the race had not taken place since 1954. However, the event returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 2021, with grandstands operating at up to 40% capacity. A maximum of 7,500 fans attended each day. Fortunately, the Monaco Grand Prix returned to full capacity in 2022.
