The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returned to ExCel London in the UK capital for the 2023 Hankook London E-Prix, where we were in the ‘Allianz Fan Village’ with a GIANT custom made digital Scalextric track, REPLICATING THE EPIC LONDON E-PRIX TRACK, FOR Formula E race fans to try and set the fastest lap.

We set up our giant Scalextric track in the ‘Allianz Fan Village’ area on Thursday 27th July. As a bonus, we had to drive around the actual race track to get the area where we needed set up. The event opened at 9.30am on Saturday 29th July and immediately the crowds poured in…and from that point onwards we had non-stop queues of people wanting to to race on our track.

Beginners Guide to Formula E

This was the first year they’ve had a ‘Fan Village’ at a London E-Prix and the organisers did such an amazing job, the event went really smoothly. There were so many activities and stalls; including racing simulators, plenty of food and drink vendors, a reaction zone, a relaxation area, of course our giant Scalextric track plus much much more. Over the weekend they also had live performances on stage from Ella Eyre and Tinie Tempah.

The weekend all came down to two final races to decide the Season 9 champion at motorsport’s only indoor and outdoor circuit. There were two new champions crowned over the weekend. Jake Dennis took his first drivers’ title, becoming the first Briton to be crowned ABB Formula E 2023 World Champion; and secondly Envision Racing with their first Constructors Championship

Thanks to the emissions-free nature of the cars, London features a unique track that weaves its way both inside and outside of the exhibition centre and around the historical heartland of the Royal Docks. This is the first time the British capital will host the final races of the Formula E season, making for an extra special London E-Prix.

Beginner’s Guide To Race Village

ABOUT THE ALLIANZ E-VILLAGE:

Allianz is the official insurance partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and is the presenting partner of the Allianz E-Village – a race day festival of exploration, technology and innovation.

As one of the world’s largest automotive insurers, Allianz has a natural interest in supporting the latest developments in urban mobility. The ABB FIA Formula E Championship is the perfect platform to drive these explorations and promote sustainable transportation, while combining excitement and innovation for fans of all ages.

Proudly presenting the Allianz E-Village at every race around the world, Formula E’s race-day festival is dedicated to exploration, adventure, innovation and technology. Allianz has played a central role in Formula E since the series inaugural season.

The first ever London E-Prix took place in 2015, at the Battersea Park Street Circuit. Since 2021, however, the venue has since moved to the ExCeL, where drivers can enjoy Formula E’s first ever indoor/outdoor track. Parts of the new circuit weave right through the centre’s exhibition hall, creating a unique experience for competitors and fans alike. In 2022, Jake Dennis and Lucas di Grassi found success in the Docklands.

Dropping into a city street circuit is mostly routine for the 24 world-class drivers, but thanks to the emissions-free nature of the all-electric machines, the Hankook London E-Prix will see a unique inside/out circuit, with the field facing a host of new challenges this weekend.Tackling changing surfaces is par for the course in Formula E, and London will be no different. Leaving the ExCeL, the drivers will have to deal with a multitude of surfaces.

Starting indoors with silky-smooth Tarmac offering bags of grip, then immediately on exit they will hit a touch of slippy metal, with some new asphalt offering a bit of purchase for the all-weather Michelins, before a painted section and finally the highly abrasive Tarmac that surrounds the exhibition centre.

That shift from inside to out will also pose a completely new challenge for the drivers as they will face an immediate change in lighting conditions. Seemingly going from an almost night-like state indoors to the bright light of the outside. There’s also a steep incline and decline at the head and close of the lap. The field will drop down at Turn 5 before barreling into Turn 6, then at the end of the lap they will head back up to the exhibition centre at Turn 20 with an energy-zapping climb to end the lap. This is all before throwing the weather into the mix, with rain on the radar ahead of the weekend an already tricky track can become even more of a daunting prospect going from wet to dry.
