We were asked by Hermes to help create some lighting features in the foyer of their head office in Leeds.
The client wanted to tell a story with the lights and have automated cars/vans and lorry’s moving around the show piece. So we came up with the plan that it needed to represent to journey of a parcel. So, after many emails and a site visit, we had a plan to create 3 large hanging lights over the reception area. Each light was almost 2m x 2m and hollow in the middle.
The first light would be a based on a village scene with a residential setting, with houses, a petrol station, some shops etc. This light represented the initial pick up of the parcel from a customer’s house by a local driver or drop off point either at a hermes parcel shop or collection units as found at petrol stations. This light had unmarked cars moving around autonomously and periodically stopping outside customers houses and the shops.
The second light was designed to be a slightly out of town scene with a small unit in an industrial estate where the local drivers drop and collect their parcels from. This light also had a row of shops with another Hermes parcel shop. We had a Hermes branded van autonomously moving around this light stopping outside the industrial unit and the shops.
The third light was the parcel reaching one of the main hubs. This light mainly consisted of the main hub with all the roller shutter entrances and a cool interior view of parcels on conveyor belts. This light had an autonomous lorry moving around it.
This was a very challenging build that tested our skills in many ways, making realistic scenes in narrow spaces, story telling, making vehicles move around autonomously and stopping in the correct places and just the logistical nightmare of moving these units without damaging the dioramas within them – let alone the installation of them of which we thankfully had help from a structural engineer.
